Hot Topic: Would you live in a haunted house?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A new survey by the National Association of REALTORS states that over half of home buyers out there would be okay with living in a haunted house, but they would want a discount of the asking price.

The 2013 Haunted House Report released on Monday talked to 1,400 perspective home buyers on the topic of haunted properties. About 34 percent of those would buy a house if it were discounted up to 30 percent, but another 22 percent say they would need a deeper cut in the price than that, with a discount of up to 50 percent.

Respondents believed that a house has a greater chance of being haunted if there was a cemetery on the property or if the home was over 100 years old. They also say a quick transition between owners, a unexplainable low price and its proximity to a battlefield could also be signs.

They listed the five incidents that would potentially scare them away from a haunted home as being levitating objects, ghost sightings, supernatural sensations, flickering lights and appliances as well as strange noises, such as footsteps and doors slamming.

The notion of 'Keeping up with the Jones' is not new, but there is a new pressure coming at you. Peer pressure - whether you're 13 or 33 - is a powerful thing. Now throw in social media and you have what an Atlanta counselor calls 'Keeping up with the Jones' on steroids. And if you're not careful that can get costly.
