CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A student at the University of Illinois at Chicago was robbed at gunpoint Tuesday a block away from the Near West Side campus.

The student was walking in the 1500 block of West Polk Street about 10 p.m. when two suspects approached and one brandished a handgun, UIC officials said in a safety alert.

They demanded the student's cell phone, wallet and book bag before running away westbound, the alert said.

The student was not hurt, and no one is in custody, the alert said.

Campus police are asking students to be aware of their surroundings, travel in groups when possible and refrain from displaying electronic devices in public.

The UIC Police/Chicago Police Department Joint Robbery Task Force are investigating, along with Area Central detectives.
