Stephen Colbert roasts the powerful at Alfred E. Smith charity dinner

Posted: Updated:

Some of the most powerful people in New York gathered at the Waldorf-Astoria Thursday night for the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner, named after a former governor of New York. It raised money for needy children.

Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, Mayor Michael Bloomberg were just a few of the powerful guests at the dinner.

Smith was governor for many years and was the Democratic Party's nominee for president in 1928. He was a champion for the needy and urban residents.

The irreverent Stephen Colbert, who makes his living poking fun at the powerful, was the keynote speaker.

Because Smith was the first Catholic presidential nominee, plenty of politicians and clergy were there -- something Colbert took full advantage of.

Bank of America CEO Brian Moynihan got the first award from Cardinal Dolan for his philanthropy.

Fox 5 anchor Ernie Anastos and My9 vice president Dianne Doctor also attended.

The event raised $3 million for New York City's neediest children. That is the most money raised in a year that a president has not been in attendance at the dinner.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
