CHANDLER, Ariz. -

Caught on camera -- a man shopping for a diamond engagement ring takes off without paying for it -- and police believe he might use it to pop the question.

It happened at the Helzburg's Diamond store at Chandler Fashion Mall.

"He hangs out, he sits down, he hovers over the counters looking at the different options they have available," describes Officer Emma Bribiescas, Chandler Police.

Chandler Police Officer Emma Bribiescas points out the suspect in the surveillance video, a man she says spent a June day shopping for an engagement ring. And you can say he got away with exactly what he wanted.

"Once he takes off running, it's just going through that children's play area."

"He had pretended to be buying an engagement ring, he had shopped to close to an hour establishing a really good relationship with the cashier who was trying to sell him an engagement ring, and after about an hour he finally selected the ring that he wanted. He said I'll take it and he ran out of the store with it."

Officer Bribiescas says the suspect is described as a black male in his 30s. He ran out of Helzburg's Diamonds inside Chandler Mall with this diamond ring worth about $7,000.

"They state that he made a posture as if he was running with a football he just tucked the ring in his hand and he just sprinted out of the store. He ran out through the children's area, and it was pretty crowded that day so nobody caught him before he left."

Detectives believe the suspect used the ring to propose marriage because of the time he spent picking it, and hope anyone who sees the video or the ring can identify him.

The suspect has a tattoo on his right ring finger and his pinky finger. He may also have a neck tattoo.
