Man Shot By U.S. Marshals In Penn's Landing

Posted: Updated:

A man was shot by U.S.  Marshals at the Chart House restaurant in Penn's Landing.

The incident happened at around 5p.m. Thursday afternoon at 555 South Columbus Blvd.

This was a planned take down by U.S. Marshals, State Parole and Philadelphia Police Department all working together. It ended with officers hurt and the suspect shot.

Drew Roman, a Chef on the Spirit of Philadelphia was on the back of the boat when a chaotic scene unfolded, what he witnessed right next door in the parking lot of the Chart House Restaurant on Columbus Boulevard in South Philly.

"I heard about 8 shots I heard them like pop pop pop go off," Roman said. "And then about 50 cop cars came into the parking lot and it was strange."

"They fired like 8 or 9 shots they unloaded into the car," Roman said.

Thursday afternoon U.S. Marshals were staking out the restaurant waiting for 27-year-old Eugene Dykes.

They set up undercover agents and officers after learning Dykes would be dropping off his girlfriend who authorities say works at the chart house.

U.S. Marshals say when Dykes pulled up, they surrounded the car and Dykes attempted a violent get away.

"He had two warrants out for him he was on state parole for an aggravated assault and currently wanted on another assault where he stabbed somebody and was wanted out of South Detectives," Tom Smith, Assistant Chief of US Marshals said.

"He tried to ram some of the officers vehicles, actually hit two of the officers with his car, almost pinning one against the wall, he hit other cars in the parking lot," Smith said.

"Before he was able to crush the other officer a couple of the other task force officers including a deputy marshal and a state parole officer discharged their weapons," Smith said. "He was armed with a 2000 pound vehicle I don't know if he had a gun."

They shot dykes. He was taken to Jefferson Hospital where he is listed in critical condition. Officials haven't' said how many shots were fired or whether Dykes had a weapon.
