Police: Man attacks elderly mother-in-law with pliers

FAYETTE COUNTY, Ga. -

An 82-year-old woman is in critical condition after police say her son-in-law attacked her with a pair of pliers.

According to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office, Robert Kelly assaulted three women at his home with pliers on Sharon Court on Oct. 8.

Two of the victims, one of whom is Kelly's wife, were treated and released from Grady Memorial Hospital, while the elderly woman remains hospitalized. Authorities said she has fractured vertebrae, bleeding in the brain and that she lost a tooth in the attack.

"It's very serious. I mean, this could have been much worse," said Fayette County Sheriff Barry Babb. "It's bad enough as it is, but it could have been much worse."

Kelly was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal attempt to commit murder, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery and felony criminal damage in the first degree.

FOX 5 has learned that in 2008 and 2011, police were called to Kelly's home on domestic disturbance charges. Kelly was arrested and charged in the 2011 call.
