ATLANTA -

A normally busy road in Buckhead was shut down early Wednesday after a car hit a tree and then plunged into a creek.  It happened along Collier Road near Overbrook Drive, and police say the driver faces DUI charges.

Police say the BMW convertible hit a tree, and then kept rolling down an embankment into a creek.  It landed upside down.  They say the tree fell into the roadway, bringing down power lines with it.

The driver and one passenger inside the vehicle were both taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.  The driver, who has not been identified, is charged with driving under the influence and reckless driving.

The mess forced police to close Collier Road, but one lane reopened just before 8 a.m.  Traffic was moving slowly through the area, so drivers should avoid it if possible until the road reopens completely.

Georgia Power crews are working to restore power to 216 customers in the area who lost power as a result of the accident.

FOX 5's Marc Teichner reports the tree that was hit was dead from a previous lightning strike, and that's why the car involved kept going.  Police tell FOX 5 the people inside the car may have been killed if the tree weren't already dead.
