Man charged after leading police on chase through Ferndale cemetery

FERNDALE, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Sterling Heights man is facing felony charges after police say he tried to flee from officers by driving through a cemetery Sunday morning, knocking over headstones and mowing down flowers.

Ferndale police say 43-year-old Michael Wasikowski was being stopped because of an outstanding warrant when pulled into the driveway of the Machpelah Jewish Cemetery on Woodward Avenue. After the officer got out of his patrol car Wasikowski put the car in gear and took off into the property, almost hitting a 75-year-old pedestrian who had to jump out of his way to avoid a collision.

The speed limit around a cemetery is typically five miles per hour; but the cemetery's general manager, Paul Saville, estimates Wasikowski was going about 45 - 50 miles per hour.

Wasikowski drove his 2003 Dodge Intrepid into several headstones and flowers before ditching his vehicle. He tried to make a run for it but two other officers arrested him when he tried to leave through the cemetery's by climbing over a gate.

Wasikowski was wanted for an outstanding warrant in Roseville for fleeing and eluding police. He is now jailed on a $150,000 bond and is facing additional felony charges of fleeing and eluding and resisting police and a misdemeanor charge of malicious destruction of tombs and memorials.

Saville says it will cost hundreds to repair the damage. "Hopefully he'll be able to pay restitution back to the cemetery because we are a nonprofit cemetery. We don't have a lot of money," Saville tells Fox 2's Andrea Isom.
