Posted: Updated:

COVERT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A federal report says Michigan's three nuclear power plants are fairly average in the number of safety violations, but two stand out in the number of higher level problems.

The Government Accountability Office report obtained by The Associated Press says America's 65 nuclear plants averaged four higher level and 170 total violations in 2000-2012.

It says southwestern Michigan's Palisades plant had eight higher level and 234 total violations. The Lake Michigan shoreline plant in Van Buren County's Covert Township recently had a sustained shut down for a water tank leak.

The report says the twin-reactor Donald Cook plant in Berrien County's Lake Township had 11 higher level and 179 total violations, while the Fermi 2 plant in Monroe County's Frenchtown Township had one higher level and 161 total violations.
