MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Sixteen years ago Antonio Martin was shot and killed defending his sister from gunmen.

Friday night his family lit candles to help justice find their loved one's killer.

Patience, hope and, perseverance are just some the qualities that Sharon Martin uses to get through the day. She along with family and friends wanted to send a message to the killers at-large.

"Until I get justice for my son, I am going to keep speaking out," she said.

In 1997 two gunmen killed her son, one of the original members of the Three 6 Mafia rap group. It was robbery gone bad.

"You took a family member from us, you took someone who was precious to me."

"All these years, I never wanted to talk about it because it hurts," said Katritrese Taylor, Antonio's sister.

Police say gunmen with stocking masks broke into the apartment Antonio shared with his sister. They pistol-whipped her believing a boyfriend had left money with her before he was sent to jail.

"He was asking me for the money and I was like, I don't have any money," Taylor recalled.

Antonio ran outside to call 9-1-1 and returned minutes later. The gunmen saw him and shot him dead.

"He didn't have any money," Antonio's mother said. "He was just trying to get his life together, especially trying to get into the music industry."

Friday's vigil is Martin's families way of keeping the attention focused this unsolved murder.

"we are going to keep doing this every year. Do us a favor, come forward and turn yourself in."
