Cold Case: DNA on hat helps police arrest murder suspect

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

There's a big break in a murder investigation that went cold. More than a year ago, a Phoenix man was gunned down inside his own garage.

A baseball cap that fell off one of the three suspects was left behind at the shooting scene.  Investigators were able to get DNA off of it and when they ran it through a database, they got a match.

This seemingly small part of the crime scene has now played a big role in solving a murder that happened in May 2012.

Police believe the cap fell off 24-year-old Roberto Lomeli's head after he and two other men shot and killed 24-year-old Adrian Arias inside his own garage.

"..always see him every day walking around with his pit bull.. this is something that shouldn't have happened to him.  He has two kids and a wife," said Ulysses Zamora.

Authorities say three men pulled into Arias' driveway, shot him in the back of the head and took off from the scene.

The DNA on the cap came back to a match for Lomeli, who was recently arrested in Oklahoma on drug charges.

Arias' friends say they're relieved that someone has finally been caught.

"Hope this guy thinks about what he did.  It's not right taking someone's life.  Now those two kids will grow up without a dad," said Zamora.

According to the police report, Lomeli admitted to investigators that the baseball cap was his, but he told them he was not at the murder scene, and if he had been, he would've left for Mexico.

He also told police that he's involved with gangs and drugs.

Lomeli is facing one charge of first degree murder.
