Victim's ex-boyfriend found guilty of 1st degree murder

Posted: Updated:

It's been more than a year since Takesha Barnes was gunned down in the parking lot of Westview High School after attending her daughter's graduation.

Barnes had just received an order of protection against her ex-boyfriend, Thomas Moton, but that didn't stop him outside the Avondale school.

Moton was found guilty of 1st degree murder. He will spend the rest of his life in prison. The judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

That's the maximum sentence.

Moton's family asked the judge to consider giving him parole after 25 years. But the judge said, what Moton did was unfathomable.

Takesha Barnes' family now lives out of state, but a family friend came to the sentencing.

"Just knowing that he does not have the opportunity to hurt any other woman in that fashion or manner is more than enough to make my day," said Tomeka Colenburg.

During the sentencing, Moton apologized for what he did. Defense attorneys told the judge, when Moton was a child, he saw his mom's boyfriend shoot and kill her.
