DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS, Tenn. (FOX13) -

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton says he has big expansion plans for downtown's Beale Street.

Earlier this week, readers of USA Today voted Beale as the most iconic street in America but Mayor Wharton says as far as he is concerned this is just the beginning.

"It's iconic now but listen ... you ain't seen nothing yet," the mayor proclaimed.

"Beale Street does not stop on the west at Second Street," Mayor Wharton added. "It goes by the mighty Orpheum; that's part of Beale Street too. The most active part of Beale Street should be down where the historic Beale Street meets the mighty Mississippi River. That's our Broad Street, that's our Times Square and we are going to take it there."

Mayor Wharton says the final obstacle for his vision is control of Handy Park.

A settlement has been reached, and the mayor says he plans to present it to the city council next week. After that, it could be only a matter of two months before the city has full control of Beale and expansion plans can move forward.

What do you think about expanding Beale Street to the river?
