School Bans Popular Playground Game

Posted: Updated:

It was once a staple during recess, but now the game "tag- you're it" is being banned in public schools.

We all remember it from our childhoods: tag, TV tag, freeze tag and all the different variations that our little creative minds could come up with. The bottom line for the school districts in question is that kids are being too tough on the blacktop, and school officials think that banning the game will make the playground safer.

Tag has been banned in school districts in several states already, and now a school in New Hampshire is joining the ban. The main reason is that teachers are worried about injuries and say that some kids have made the game too rough. The other issue is that kids are running around, interfering with other games and hitting innocent bystanders.

However, parents say that at some point, you have to let kids be kids.

"I think the minute you use the word ‘safety,' all conversation is supposed to stop. Now if we take that to the extreme, none of us could do anything if we want to be 100% safe. You're never gonna have that," Bill Chisholm said. "No one's gonna have any fun that way and no one's gonna learn that way."

Students and parents have asked school officials to reconsider, but the principal is not budging.
