MEMPHIS, Tenn. -

Christian Brothers University President Dr. John Smarrelli, Jr., appointed Donna Crone as the school's Interim Athletics Director, effective immediately, following the passing of Joe Nadicksbernd last month.

Crone, a two-sport athlete at CBU, has been CBU's Senior Woman Administrator for the past 12 years and Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance for the past four years. In addition to Crone, Assistant Athletics Director Mike Nienaber and Administrative Assistant Susan Fuller will share more responsibilities.

"I am pleased that Donna has agreed to step into this role," Smarrelli said. "She has played a key role in the success of CBU athletics. During this time of transition, we will look to Donna, Mike and Susan to help to fill the void Joe left behind. Their familiarity and experience with the day to day operations of the department will keep us moving forward."

She is a member of the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee for women's golf, and she is the GSC liaison for men's and women's golf. Crone also completed a three-year term on the Regional Advisory Committee for softball. She was also a recipient of the NCAA Division II Strategic Alliance Matching Grant Enhancement Program.

"It is bittersweet to take over for a legend like Coach Nate, but he was my mentor for 15 years and I feel confident in carrying on his legacy of excellence in CBU athletics," said Crone.

Previously, she served as head softball coach for 10 years, coaching 16 All-GSC players and two GSC Freshmen of the Year. In her first season, her team set an NCAA record which still stands with seven triples in a game. Crone, the school's all-time winningest coach, led CBU to its four highest win totals.

Crone played basketball and tennis for CBU, graduating in 1983. She earned her Master's of Business Education from the University of Memphis in 1988. Crone's dedication to CBU extends throughout her family. Her husband, Chris, graduated from CBU in 1976. Her daughter, Kristen, graduated in 2011 and is pursuing her master's degree after spending two years as a Lasallian Volunteer in Oakland and St. Louis, and her son, Justin, is enrolled at CBU as well.

CBU plans a national search for a permanent Athletics Director. More details will be announced at a later date.
