Dilapidated home demolished in Atlanta neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

The Atlanta Police Department brought in a demolition crew to take down a dilapidated house in the Pittsburgh neighborhood.

The home had been abandoned since 2007. Neighbors see its demolition as a sign of hope for the historically black community.

"It brings such negativity to the community," Richard Towns said.

The city of Atlanta brought in a demolition crew after the Pittsburgh Community Improvement Association petitioned it to tear down the dilapidated home.

"This is one of the properties I think that just fell into disrepair because family members have aged, have moved out of the neighborhood," LaShawn Hoffman, the CEO of the Pittsburgh Community Improvement Association

Atlanta Police Department code enforcement officers cited the property owners for vacancy, overgrowth, as well as having trash and debris on site. Major C.J. Davis says the house was a serious hazard and crime magnet for the neighborhood.

"Fighting blight is very similar to fighting crime. It takes a very aggressive and very deliberate enforcement," Davis said.

The demolition crew had to carefully plan how to tear down the structure because it was so close to utility lines and less than 12 from Towns' home.

Neighbors said they are relieved now that the eyesore is gone.

"We can now come out our front door not to worry about snakes or anyone lurching in the bushes," Towns said.

Last year, the property owners said they would pay to have their house on Smith Street Demolished. But in the end, the city of Atlanta had to pay $25,000 to have the house torn down.
