Family mourns 3-year-old killed in street racing crash

PHOENIX -

Street racing in the middle of a Phoenix neighborhood. Because of that, an innocent family was seriously hurt after one of the cars racing collided with theirs.

Sadly, a 3-year-old was pulled off life supposed on Monday and died. The boy's father spoke to us today in hope of getting his son's story out.

This family is absolutely heartbroken. They're remembering this young boy whose life was cut short.

"I was just driving normally…"

Jose Garces, his 3-year-old son Eric, and his two other young daughters were on their way to a party. They were a few blocks away when their lives changed in an instant.

"Four seconds later we got all the impact."

Their Nissan was hit head on near the intersection of 31st Avenue and Greenway by an Acura. Police believe the driver may have been drag racing.

The family was taken to the hospital, and sadly, Monday, 3-year-old Eric died in his hospital bed surrounded by his family.

"He was incredible."

Speaking through tears and clutching his sons picture, Jose Garces remembers his young son outside the hospital -- where his two other daughters are still recovering from their injuries.

The driver of the Acura that hit the Garces family was this man, 19-year-old Edgar Martinez. Police believe he may have been impaired on drugs.

He is now behind bars and will likely face manslaughter charges, according to police.

The family says they have nothing to say to him.

"He has his own problems. Now my kid has died."

The Garces family is now coming together as they heal, and grieve the loss of their young son and brother.

Jose Garces is a server at Don Ruben's Mexican Restaurant in Glendale -- they have set up a donation jar there and all the servers have also donated a large portion of their tips to the family.
