Job Shop: The meaning of 'corporate culture'

Hiring managers always talk about someone fitting in to the "corporate culture," but the meaning is very fuzzy. Candidates really have little idea what it means; therefore, they have no idea how to see if they will fit in.

Beth Grossman from Angott Search Group offers up what corporate culture really means:

  • THE COMPANY'S MISSION STATEMENT (their key values, what's most important to them)
  • TEAM FOCUS (do they work a great deal in teams or do they value individual performance more)
  • ADAPTABILITIES (how they expect their employees to adapt to different situations and to change within the company)
  • SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (is the company involved in charitable work and do they want employees who are also)
  • EMPOWERMENT (do they want employees who can make their own decisions or do they want employees who will follow commands of others)

These are just a few of the factors that are included in corporate culture, but it's critical for candidates interviewing for jobs to know that it's important.
