Police And Neighbors Fear Retaliation Ambush Shooting

KINGSESSING -
Neighbors at 54th and Florence Avenue were still catching their breath Monday after an ambush shooting here Sunday night left one dead and five others wounded.

"I just heard pop, pop, pop, pop. Just back to back. It was non-stop," one neighbor told Fox 29.
The only thing I could do was get up and run in the house. My daughters and me, we ran in the house."
"This is scary," another neighbor said

The gunfire erupted just before 7 p.m. Sunday evening outside the Los Papi Deli and Grocery. That's when police say several gunmen opened fire into a crowd of young men standing at the store. More than 50 shots were fired.

"These four or five males, all armed with guns, just started firing into the crowd," said Homicide Unit Captain James Clark at an afternoon press conference.

Neighbors too afraid to give their names say everyone was running for their lives.

"You know bullets don't have names on them so," one resident added.

Homicide detectives say they have little to go on so far. They're checking surveillance video from nearby stores. Witnesses say the handful of gunmen all wore hooded sweat shirts. Police are  trying to determine if this shooting might be linked to a murder right around the corner two weeks ago.

"It's bad enough one person was killed," Clark said. "We could have a lot more killed that night."

Police were stationed outside the store and patrolling the community all day, there's no doubt police and residents here are worried about retaliation shootings.

"There are a lot of previous shootings right in that area," Clark said.

"I just hope there's not no retaliation, I really hope not . I'm just praying that it's over," a neighbor said.

"I pray every day, not just for my child, but everybody else's child," another added.

Capt. Clark identified the murder victim as 23 year old Devon Hatch, who lives two blocks from shooting scene. His brother was also shot and wounded.

One victim remains in critical condition, the others are listed in stable condition.
