I-85 lane closures to continue through midday Wednesday

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Repairs to two southbound lanes of Interstate 85 are taking longer than planned.  The Georgia Department of Transportation says emergency repairs to the  two inside lanes of I-85 south will continue through midday on Wednesday, and the lanes will remain closed until they're completed.

GDOT says drainage problems are to blame for the emergency closures, which began on Monday.  They say a huge crater opened up when the a drain failed and the road collapsed under the interstate. Crews worked continuously overnight trying to repair the damage.

Both the HOV lane and the adjacent lane on the left are shut down as crews repair the failed drainage structure and fill a void created under the pavement.  They'll be working nonstop until it's fixed, and GDOT said Tuesday morning that will now take until midday on Wednesday.

GDOT says drivers should avoid the area, which is just north of Clairmont Road, if possible.  If they can't avoid the area, drivers are urged to slow down and expect delays through midday Wednesday.  Drivers are also asked to use extreme caution in the area and specifically to avoid talking on cell phones while they're passing through to prevent distractions.

The repairs cost about $50,000.
