A line of powerful storms that came out of a cold front hit the tristate region on Monday with heavy rain and strong wind. The storm system prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Tornado Watch for a large portion of the region. A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado.

Powerful rainstorms and wind knocked down a lot of trees in New York and New Jersey.

Utility crews were working to fix scattered power outages affecting about 12,000 customers in eastern New York, the AP reported.

As many as 20 large trees came down in the storm along East Ridgewood Avenue in Paramus, right in front of Bergen Regional Hospital. Residents say the wind suddenly changed directions and wondered if it was a tornado. But the National Weather Service said it had not received any reports of tornadoes.

In Dix Hills, Long Island, a tree came crashing down on a car on Arista Drive. Falling tree branches hit the driver. She was taken to Huntington Hospital with minor injuries.

The Coast Guard rescued three fishermen from a sinking boat off Gardiners Island, N.Y., during the stormy weather on Monday, the service said.
