Nearly 400 dogs spared euthanasia in Ga. shelters

HINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - An animal rescue nonprofit group has saved about 400 dogs and puppies from being euthanized at Savannah-area animal shelters.

WSAV-TV reported Saturday that the organization, Pilots N Paws, rounded up dogs that were set to be put down. The organization used the help of volunteer pilots to fly the dogs to no-kill shelters and foster homes in Florida, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., Virginia and New Jersey.

Petmate spokeswoman, Kristen Kauffman, says some of the dogs are being evaluated to become PTSD service dogs as part of its "Paws of War" program. Petmate donates crates, harnesses and more to the Pilots N Paws program each year.
