PHOENIX -

A 3-year-old child died Monday morning after police say a speeding car crashed into an oncoming vehicle two days before.

Phoenix Police Lt. Ben Henry says witnesses saw two vehicles speeding that may have been illegal street racing near 31st Avenue and Greenway.

At some point, officers believe of those cars, an Acura, hit an oncoming Nissan sedan head-on and then rolled over onto its roof.

Bystanders started administering first aid before firefighters arrived.

3-year-old Eric Garces was riding in the Nissan and had a life threatening injury. He was taken to a hospital where he died on Monday morning.

His family was with him when he passed away.

Also in the Nissan, was a man and two other children, ages 5 and 10.

Police say the man had serious, but non-life threatening injuries. He wasn't impaired.

The 11-year-old and 5-year-old children had non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Acura, 19-year-old Edgar Martinez, had minor injuries and officers say he may have been impaired by drugs.  His front seat passenger had serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

Martinez was booked into the Maricopa County Fourth Avenue Jail for four counts of aggravated assault and one count of endangerment.

Police say he will likely face manslaughter charges.

The roadway was closed during Saturday night while officers investigated.
