Gov't Shutdown Cancels Local Hometown Heroes Event

Posted: Updated:
HORSHAM, Pa. -

The Horsham Air Guard Station tarmac would have stood 10,000 people strong for a special event honoring the military and their families. And National Guard Captain Tim Mcmanus had it all mapped out:

"As soon as you came in you were going to have some of our heavy equipment parked right here," McManus said. "On the former runway out there, we were actually going to have a 5k for charity, so we had to nix that. There was actually going to be a stage set up in this area. We were going to have a couple bands set up, and that's where we were going to do our Hometown Heroes event."

Due the shutdown of the federal government, which put many troops at the National Air Guard station on furlough, all of the fun was canceled.

"We said if our family's not going to be here then, you know, we're just not going to move forward with it. So we just had to pull the plug on it," said Mcmanus.

The public would have seen rigs used by the Stryker force and numerous Humvees on the base. Equipment used for civil engineer work would have been a draw, too. All of this on a base many forgot about when the navy side closed.

"We're in uniform, people walk up to us, 'Hey, thanks for your service. Where are you stationed?' And you just point right across the street and say, 'Well, we're actually stationed right there.' We're still here, still coming to the base every day."

It's not the only shutdown casualty facing out area. Lydia Rosenfield, a tourist from New York, was among thousands of tourists on a busy Old City night looking at the famous landmarks of freedom, but doing so from afar with the federal property now closed.

"We were able to see the Liberty Bell through the glass, but it's not the same thing as going in being able to actually see it," said Rosenfield.

"At Independence Hall, there's guards that won't let you get near it. You can't get close.  That's the way it is."
