According to the FBI, Tennessee tops the list of states with the highest violent crime rate, per capita.

The FBI's latest statewide statistics offer a snapshot of the underside of the 50 states: where violent crime is most likely to occur. According to the FBI, violent crime includes murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

In 2012, there were 388 homicides in the state, more than 2,000 forcible rapes, more than 8,100 robberies and nearly 31,000 aggravated assaults. 

According to the FBI, the violent crimes per 100,000 is 643.6 for 2012 in Tennessee.

Here is the top 10 states on the list with the highest rate of violent crime.

2.  Nevada

3.  Alaska

4.  New Mexico

5.  South Carolina

6.  Delaware

7.  Louisiana

8.  Florida

9.  Maryland

10. Oklahoma
