PCSO: Man fatally stabs mom, says 'God make me do it'

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -

A Pinal County man is in custody for a disturbing crime: he's accused of stabbing his own mother to death.

Deputies say he almost killed his aunt as well, but a neighbor stepped in.

That neighbor saved the aunt's life and spoke exclusively with FOX 10.

It was a pretty gruesome murder, but with a twist.

The accused killer, Joseph Cain Cecil, told his neighbor that he murdered his mom because "God told him to do it."

That neighbor is being hailed a hero for grabbing a shovel, stepping in and stopping the stabbing rampage.

"I heard mom in there screaming, that's when I grabbed the shovel and went through the arcadia door and I told him if he swung the knife again, I'd hit him with the shovel and he did. He swung the knife, I hit him with the shovel and he dropped the knives," said Richard Meyers.

Meyers is being hailed a hero by the Pinal County Sheriff.

Meyers broke a door to get inside and was able to put an end to Joseph Cain Cecil's stabbing rampage.

"Calm and nonchalant and told me that angels told him to do it and God wanted his mom dead," said Meyers.

"Talking very strange. He would get into religious stuff, then he would get into devil stuff. Sometimes you didn't know who he was worshipping, God or the devil," said Charlene Eiden, Cecil's grandmother.

She says her grandson suffered from schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder and had been institutionalized for six years.

He'd been out for nearly two years and recently she says Cecil had begun to act strange around the house.

"They were scared enough that they hid all the knives," said Eiden.

But Friday night, Cecil found some knives and carried out the family's worst fear.

Cecil's mother, 65-year-old Ronna Thomas, died at the hospital.

His aunt, who tried to stop him, was stabbed several times.

The grieving grandmother says the tragedy could've been prevented.

"He basically should have never, ever have been let out of the state hospital, never," said Eiden.

Family members say they tried to get Cecil back in the hospital, but were told by mental health workers that there wasn't anything wrong with him.

Meanwhile, the aunt who was stabbed was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay.

The sheriff says if it wasn't for her neighbor, she might have also been stabbed to death.
