Ferguson to relative: "Handle the money the way we did last time"

Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his friend Bobby Ferguson face sentencing next week following their convictions on public corruption charges. Prosecutors filed documents showing they want both to serve up to 28-years behind bars, but pre-sentencing reports also tell of some shady phone conversations Ferguson had with friends and relatives.

Jail-house phone calls are known to be recorded, but prosecutors say that didn't stop Ferguson from laying it all out on the line.

Prosecutors allege investigators were listening in to Ferguson's phone calls as he told his girlfriend and others how to manage his property and financial affairs. They say Ferguson, while in prison, instructed his girlfriend and a relative to buy gift cards for family members, wire money to his prison account and transfer his vehicle to relatives.

Ferguson allegedly told a relative in April, about a month after he was found guilty of public corruption, to get with his girlfriend and "handle the money the way we did last time."

These new allegations could complicate Ferguson's upcoming bid-rigging case because he convinced a judge to give him a court-appointed lawyer claiming he was broke. Fox 2 tried contacting Ferguson's attorney to respond to the allegations, but our calls were not returned.
