Drug Use, Construction Debris Dumping Rampant At NJ Cemetery

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

Illegal dumping in the city of Camden is nothing new. But this?

There's outrage over conditions at a Camden cemetery that was once the burial place for South Jersey's rich, famous and powerful.

Today, it sits as a reminder that, for some folks, respect for the dead is an outdated concept.

FOX 29's Bruce Gordon responded to a tip call Friday morning. What he found at the Evergreen Cemetery on Mount Ephraim Avenue sickened him.

As old, rundown cemeteries go, this isn't the worst we've seen – once you get past the American flag, hanging disgracefully in shredded tatters overhead.

Soon, Gordon spotted at least three big piles of construction debris illegally dumped near the northern edge of the sprawling property. Drywall, bricks and roofing debris were piled right next to a once-impressive looking gravesite.

And Gordon found something even more outrageous when he met with a grieving family member at the cemetery. The sight will make your blood boil.

Spread out like mulch over the gravestones near a graffiti-covered wall were all manner of drug paraphernalia, liquor bottles and beer cans.

Evergreen is in bankruptcy. Basic maintenance is provided by a neighboring cemetery.

Gordon made some calls to ask about improving that maintenance and about the possibility of increased police patrols, anything to keep the drug users at bay.

Find out if he was able to get results for those who are trying to rest in peace at Evergreen Cemetery, and the loved ones who come to visit them, in this video report.
