ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

The family of hit-and-run victim Wade Souster released a statement late Thursday afternoon saying:

"We are devastated that whoever hit him did not stop to help, but we are grateful to the driver who found him and did call an ambulance. We are also thankful that Wade is alive and we hope and pray that he will have a full recovery."

Souster, 31, was found just before 4 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Atlantic Street and Phalen Boulevard. He was taken to Regions Hospital, where he is in critical condition with a head injury.

St. Paul Police spokesman Howie Padilla says Souster was found unconscious about 10 to 15 feet from the crosswalk. It's unclear what time the hit-and-run occurred, and investigators could not find enough evidence to determine what type of car they should be looking for.

"This is a situation where we have very little to go on," Padilla admitted. "We have nothing to go on. This man, his loved ones, his friends -- they are all going to want some answers and you know what we need to give those answers.... We need the public's help."

Padilla is asking the public to be on the lookout for vehicles with fresh damage to the front-end, possibly on the driver side. Body shop employees should be particularly aware of any new damage. The owner of the Downtowner Car Care, where Souster, works said he is in shock and will do all he can to look for a possible suspect.

In the statement released Thursday afternoon, Souster's family goes onto say:

"Wade grew up in Inver Grove Heights. He now lives in the Lake Phalen area and often liked to go for a walk late at night. He loves and makes friends with everyone, which is why everyone calls him 'Uncle Wade,' not just his many nieces and nephews.

"A Caring Bridge site will be set up by this weekend so Wade's many friends and loved ones can follow his progress. We ask that you keep him in your prayers. For anyone who may have information about who hit Wade, please call the police."

Anyone with information is asked to call 651-266-5722.
