A newly minted budget deal to avert future government shutdowns gained important ground Wednesday among House Republicans who are more accustomed to brinkmanship than compromise, even though it would nudge federal deficits higher three years in a row.

The 16-day partial government shutdown is all but certain to figure prominently in Thursday's final sparring match between candidates in the governor's race. And that could be a problem for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

WASHINGTON -

Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Washington to see our national monuments each year. The federal government shutdown has closed many popular attractions, but angry citizens are openly defying barricades and are visiting national park sites anyway.

It is almost like an unplanned people's rebellion. Tourists from all over the country and the world traveled long distances to get here, and they are refusing to let lawmakers' indecision over the budget interfere with their vacations.

Vince Maniscalco and his wife, Christine, have been on a four-week, cross-country motorcycle tour. They are upset that the monuments are supposed to be closed. But they went to see some of them down on the National Mall anyway.

Somebody pushed aside the barricade blocking the Vietnam Memorial, and visitors are stopping by despite signs that said it was closed because of the government shutdown.

Dee Dee Council and Kim Mayo had come from Goldsboro, N.C., to get married. But their wedding venue was shut down with the government. The officiant who facilitated their same-sex marriage arranged an outdoor solution on the Mall in violation of a barricade and sign saying the park was closed.
