PHOENIX - Police have rescued a starving and seriously malnourished dog and arrested her owner on animal cruelty charges. The bull mastiff's chain was so tight that only her hind legs could touch the ground.

Phoenix Police was called to an apartment complex near Peoria and 19th Avenues on Sept. 28 in response to a domestic violence call. 28-year-old Corina Ann Martinez was arrested and her boyfriend may face charges too.

When they arrived, police say they saw a severally emaciated 2-year-old Bull mastiff attached to the door knob of one of the bedrooms. Bull mastiffs often weigh over a hundred pounds -- but she weighed only 28.

Police say the dog, named Ryder, had no water and her bones could be seen under the skin. She was so weak she couldn't walk without falling down.

After officers dealt with the domestic violence issue, they took the dog out of the home.

"He is in pretty bad shape, she has been very neglected and she's just skin and bones," said Ashleigh Goebel, Arizona Humane Society.

Martinez allegedly told officers she knew the dog was in physical distress, but didn't try to help her.

Ryder was starved for so long, vets aren't sure she'll survive. Ryder remains at the Humane Society in critical condition, but she is eating on a schedule and slowly progressing.

"We're all rooting for her, she's got a lot of fans already at the shelter," added Goebel. "I think she's determined but only the future will tell."

If Ryder makes it, she'll be up for adoption in a month and a half.
