LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -

The imminent government shutdown would affect workers facing furloughs. It's a direct hit in the pocketbook. But it could also take a bite out of local businesses.

If the standstill continues in Washington, a painful shutdown is looming for federal workers in Phoenix who would stop getting paychecks.

"Well I have bills to pay like everybody else, rent, food, regular credit card bills, gas," one federal employee, who didn't want to be named, told us.

A shutdown could affect businesses too. Like Lucie's Sage and Sand Grill, next to Luke Air Force Base. This place has been around since the 1950s. Model airplanes hang from the ceiling.

Generations of pilots and all sorts of Luke personnel have come here to unwind. The types of people who could be furloughed make up about a quarter of the business here.

"It is going to impact us in a big way," says Mitch Stevens of Lucie's Sage and Sand Grill. "It is going to hurt our economy here, local businesses, the whole big picture not just a few people."

Around here everybody seems to know somebody looking at a layoff.

"I have a good friend of mine who works over there who these guys know, and it is going to affect him drastically because he needs a paycheck every two weeks," says John Dechandt.

Those workers, and there are about 50,000 of them in Arizona, are hoping there's some kind of a deal to avert a shutdown.
