Atlanta mayor talks possible government shutdown

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said that the looming government shutdown should be avoided.

The fifth-largest concentration of federal employees is in the Atlanta region.

Reed said that the economic turnaround is too fragile to withstand a manufactured crisis.

"Let's not have the federal government bring their problems into our living rooms," Reed said.

Reed said that 44,000 jobs in the metro Atlanta region would be impacted by a government shutdown.

Aside from direct employment, there are services and programs at stake, such as lunches for school children provided by federal subsidy. The mayor says the shutdown would have both a tangible economic impact and a psychological one.

Reed, a staunch ally of President Barack Obama, said the responsibility for the budget crisis lies in both parties.

"I think that there is blame to go around on both sides," Reed said. "All we got to do is really look at Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill. Ronald Reagan did multiple deals with then-Speaker Tip O'Neill and once they got a deal, both sides honored them. And nobody got all of what they wanted.

Reed took part in a conference call with White House officials on Monday regarding the potential impact of the government shutdown.
