Government workers brace for possible shutdown

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The American Federation of Government Employees, better known as AFGE, represents 650,000 federal and DC government workers-- everyone from maintenance workers, nurses, engineers to social services.
They'll all be effected by the government shutdown.

Department of Justice Attorney Carmel Morgan did what she could to try and relax this weekend, but it was tough.

"It does feel a little different this weekend because I don't know what's going to happen,"Morgan says.

AFGE has told its members to report to work as usual Monday, and stay tuned for updates on a possible government shutdown.

" I'm very frustrated. It's aggravating and I don't think uncertainty is good for anybody. It's not good in the business world, and I don't think it's a good way to run the country,"Morgan says,

Eric Bunn,National Vice President for AFGE District 14 says Congress needs to know this isn't just about money, it's about people's lives.

" It's impacting services. You're impacting morale. You're impacting what they're going to do. How do you know if you' re going to be able to pay your mortgage next week?

Bunn says AFGE is taking its protests to the next level.

" AFGE does have a plan. We're taking legal action against the government. We're informing our members how to contact their Congressmen. People need to stand up and say something enough is enough,"Bunn says.

Time may be running out. Some analysts say the fact that the House approved a bill to keep paying us soldiers in the event the government runs out of money on October first may be a sign that they've resigned themselves to a shutdown.
