PALMETTO, Ga. -

Legendary former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda traveled thousands of miles to get to a metro Atlanta town this week, just so he could deliver a message to a girl badly injured at a baseball game this past summer.

Summer Johnson of Palmetto was hit in the eye by a foul ball traveling more than 100 miles per hour and it was Lasorda who was the first person to get to her. He said it was the worst thing he had ever seen.

Lasorda helped give her first aid, who ended up having multiple facial fractures and became slightly blinded in her left eye. A surgeon was able to repair damage to her face using a metal plate, but her vision has not fully returned and doctors believe it may never happen.

Johnson says she remembers her mom pacing back and forth on the phone with 911 operators while Lasorda was comforting her.

She asked the Hall of Fame manager if she would ever play softball again. Lasorda had no answer as he looked at her broken face. That is, until he traveled to visit Summer at her home.

The Johnson family shared their home video of his visit last week. Lasorda told them he had been haunted by images of Summer's injury. He told her that if she set it as her goal, she could play again, but warned the 12-year-old girl that the road ahead would be tough.

The 86-year-old tweeted photos of the occasion and included a prediction about her brother Kel. He said Kel, the top high school prospect and future Georgia Tech player, could one day turn pro.
