SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (FOX13) -

Police in Southaven, Miss., said they were forced to shoot an armed man during an apparent domestic incident over the weekend.

It happened early Sunday morning at the South Park Garden Apartments. Police officers responding to a domestic violence call involving an argument between a man and woman.

Police say the man took out a handgun and pointed at the woman. That is when officers shot him. The man was rushed to The MED in Memphis, Tenn., in critical condition.

The gun fire startled neighbors.

"It's crazy, it's crazy there was gun shots they could have came (sic) this way hit my neighbors or anything," said Chaquaria Rogan.

"It was scary; my kids were in the house asleep. I was asleep. The police knocking on the door, my neighbor knocking on the door. I didn't know what to do I was just in shock, "said Ferrala Wilson.

Neighbors say the couple had just moved to the apartment complex a few months ago.

"I see them all the time and whatnot, they seem like some quiet people," said Chaquaria Rogan.

Southaven police say the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Desoto County Sheriff's Office are handling the investigation.  The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified.

A department spokesman says the DeSoto County District Attorney will release any additional information about the incident.

Officials are expected to reveal more about the officer-shooting Monday.
