Allegation of noose in workplace may head to trial

Posted: Updated:

DERBY, Conn. (AP) - Charges have not been dismissed against a Polish immigrant who may instead go to trial over accusations he brandished a noose to a black co-worker.

Tadeusz Chmielewski faces a disorderly conduct charge after an incident in Orange in May when he allegedly tried to slip a noose around a co-worker's head. Chmielewski pleaded not guilty.

The New Haven Register reports that Chmielewski tried Thursday to enter a rehabilitation program.

Wydell Sims, who told police Chmielewski tried to place the noose around his neck, argued against his attempt to enter the rehabilitation program.

Chmielewski's lawyer says he only held the rope up and did not try to put it around Sims' neck.

Derby Superior Court Judge Charles Lee says a jury should resolve the dispute over the noose.
