A teacher in the Paradise Valley Unified School District has resigned after apparently telling a student "I'm going to kill you" out of frustration.

A parent notified the school district Tuesday that her son's teacher Suzan Smelson spoke "harshly and inappropriately" to him.

His mom says the teacher snapped at him for talking when he wasn't supposed to, saying, "Oh my God I'm going to kill you. Do you want to be on the news, 'Teacher kills student because she can't take it anymore?'"

The Liberty Elementary School teacher was placed on leave and the issue investigated. Thursday, Smelson resigned her position with the school.

Maria Schardyn, the boy's grandmother, told FOX 10 her grandson is a sweet kid and didn't deserve to be threatened.

"If you have a hard day leave. Tell them its break time, I need to take a break, go outside, take a walk, do what you need to but the kids don't need to be subjected to that," said Schardyn.

The boy's family is relieved that Smelson is gone. They didn't want their kid going to school fearing for his life.

"Our expectation, always, is that our teachers display the highest level of professionalism in words and actions. The district provides a wide variety of professional development and wellness support resources to its employees to ensure that they are able to meet the behavioral and professional standards associated with the profession. The safety of our students comes first, with an expectation that instruction is conducted in a respectful, supportive classroom environment," stated the school district.

We spoke with Smelson however, she did not want to tell her side of the story. In the teacher's 11-year tenure at the school, she had never been disciplined.

FOX 10's Nicole Garcia reports.
