Good Samaritans pull woman from burning car

Posted: Updated:
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -

A local woman is thankful to two Good Samaritans who pulled her out of a burning car in Douglasville.

Janet Uriostegui lost control of her car on a slick road and flipped into a ditch on Tuesday morning. The 23-year-old woman was trapped inside when she smelled smoke and realized the car was fire.

"That's all that I kept playing in my head -- it's going to blow up. I need to get out of here. I started banging on the windows, kicking the glass," she said.

Her panic intensified when she saw flames shooting from the hood.

"Everybody's going to find me in here. This is it for me. I think that was the scariest part about it," she recalled.

Suddenly, a stranger appeared outside her car and used a road sign to try and smash through the windshield.

Her rescuer was Scott Cosper, an investigator with the Douglas County District Attorney's Office. Another driver handed Cosper the tire iron that eventually created an escape for Uriostegui.

"I just grabbed him, relieved that he was able to pull me out," said Uriostegui.

Emergency crews took the young woman to the hospital. She was released a few hours later after suffering only cuts and bruises.

Cosper told FOX 5 that he felt funny talking on camera about the ordeal. He insisted that he reacted the way anyone would.

"This is a man I owe my life to.  My family. we're all grateful for him," said Uriostegui.

Uriostegui would like to meet with both Good Samaritans to thank them in person.
