A recent survey finds what many people say is to blame for a lot of today's social problems. The study points to a lack of respect, and you might agree. But, the good thing is there are plenty of people out there trying to make it better.

Peter Yarrow's music with Peter, Paul and Mary is legendary, and his message today is contemporary. Yarrow is the founder of Operation Respect, an exciting program to create a respectful, safe and compassionate environment in school, home, and everywhere. It's especially designed for young people to learn about life, to grow and be positive about themselves and others.

"Here are places all over America that have adopted this program and combined them with other programs," Yarrow said. "There's great hope because we see the children are transformed. This is possible to do."

Yarrow's message is very clear: he is teaching humanity, caring and letting young people know if they have this love for themselves and others they can change the world.

"If we bring up kids have the dimension of respect being really important in their lives," yarrow said. "They could be building something that takes us away from the mean spirit and the frightening aspects of our society."

It's a long list including the recent in tragedy Newtown, Connecticut.

Operation respect was started more than 14 years ago. The Don't Laugh at Me program, which starts in grade school, is the centerpiece. It cuts right to the heart of being free of bullying, ridicule and violence.

"Kids are not formed yet -- you have to reach them before they are formed," Yarrow said.

He uses music to convey his message. The words to a simple yet powerful song say it all: "Operation Respect: but is it too much to ask, don't laugh at me don't call me names. Don't get your pleasure from my pain."

"Teachers say it is right on target and teachers say young people are feeling empowered," Yarrow said.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
