Residents complain of 911 call mix-ups

Posted: Updated:

Some 911 calls in the Atlanta area are ending up in the wrong call center.

Residents in the Atlanta portion of DeKalb County recounted numerous stories of their emergency calls being placed in the wrong hands.

"DeKalb arrived and said, ‘This is not on us,' and they left; Atlanta [police] arrived and said, ‘This is not us,' and they left. You've got carjacking victim standing there who was scared to death because somebody just put a gun in their face.  That's a problem," said Valencia Hudson.

At the meeting, 911 supervisors vowed to come up with a technical fix. In the meantime, Angela Barrett, the new Atlanta Police Department 911 Director said  that common sense should prevail when dispatchers pick up the first call.

"They should stay on the line to ensure and confirm the address so that it is not a disconnect and then that jurisdiction has to turn around and transfer the call back," said

The task force agreed to return in three weeks with cell phone providers to try to come up with a technical solution.
