ATLANTA -

A week after suffering a stroke, Evelyn Lowery is returning home.

The family of the 88-year-old Civil Rights activist said in a statement, "After receiving notification by medical experts of the irreversible damage caused by the massive stroke that our dear wife and mother experienced on last Wednesday evening, and understanding that the medical team has done all that they could do, the Lowery family has prayerfully made a decision to release her from the hospital and return her to the comforts of her home."

Evelyn Lowery, the wife of Civil Rights icon Dr. Joseph Lowery, had been hospitalized since last Wednesday.

She remains in critical condition and is under medical care at home. The family is asking for prayers.
