Students send Coke can into space

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Students from Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy sent a can of Coke all the way to the outer-edge of our atmosphere.

Video posted on YouTube shows the science project from beginning to end.

The can was attached to a weather balloon and lifted into the sky.

Teacher Ted Neill says the students were skeptical the can could make it to space.

"It was one of those things where none of the kids thought we could do it, but if we did do it, it would be amazing. And we pulled it off," Neill said.

Neill said it was about more than just science.

"One part was science, technology, engineering and math.  We wanted to get the students involved in those four subject areas," Neill said.

There was also some marketing and sales involved. The students had to find funding for their journey to space.

"We wanted to team up with a corporate partner to see if we could get some coverage from them and offer them something of value," Neill said.  "In this case for Coke, it was one heck of a commercial."

The video shows the coke and balloon soaring 100,000 feet in to the atmosphere before parachuting back to the ground. It was found 90 miles east of Atlanta and shipped back.

The post office notified federal authorities after thinking it was a suspicious package.

"I had to explain to them it was just a weather balloon and science project for high school students," Neill said.
