Pastor talks about Evelyn Lowery

ATLANTA -

The pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church says he is watching, waiting and praying with the Lowery family.

Evelyn Lowery, a civil and voting rights activist and wife to Southern Christian Leadership Conference president Joseph Lowery, is hospitalized in critical condition following a stroke last Wednesday.

Ebenezer Baptist Church Sr. Pastor Raphael Warnock said he immediately went to the hospital after he heard news of the stroke.

"I prayed with them and for her and spent some time talking with Dr. Lowery," Warnock said. "The whole  time that I sat there talking with him, he was holding Mrs. Lowery's hand. And I saw in that moment a wonderful love story of marriage and ministry."

The Lowery family released a statement over the weekend that indicated the stroke damage was "irreversible."

Evelyn Lowery founded the sister organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) called Women's Organizational Movement for Equality Now, Inc. (W.O.M.E.N.), in the late 1970s.

Warnock said that Mrs. Lowery and others who have dedicated their  lives to public service are no strangers to struggle.

"When you think about a Nelson Mandela, you think about Evelyn Lowery and Joseph Lowery -- these are people who have been pushing against the limits of what seems humanly possible for a long time and yet the human experience does have very real limitations," Warnock said.

Warnock says one bright spot is that Evelyn Lowery is still breathing on her own.
