Conn. warns residents to keep distance from moose

Posted: Updated:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A string of moose sightings in Connecticut is prompting a warning for people to keep their distance if they spot 1 of the animals.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says moose are usually shy but may behave unpredictably if they wander into populated areas.

The department said Tuesday that anybody who sees a moose should notify them and local authorities. It also warned drivers to be on the lookout for moose on roadways.

Moose have been seen recently in New Milford, Farmington and East Haddam.

The moose population in Connecticut is believed to be in the range of 100 to 150 animals. They generally are found in wooded areas in the northeastern and northwestern parts of Connecticut but have been seen across the state.
