Dogs euthanized after killing 2-year-old boy

Posted: Updated:
GILBERT, Ariz. -

It was a terrible attack. A little boy in Gilbert mauled to death by a group of pit bulls. His babysitter is recovering in the hospital after she was wounded by the dogs while trying to break up the fight.

A police officer did CPR on the toddler, but the 2 and a half year old later died at the hospital. Four of his siblings were in the home too, but none of them were injured, although at least one of them witnessed the mauling.

We talked with the aunt of the little boy who died.

Caller: "Help I need an ambulance I have a hurt baby!"

28-year-old Lara Czerniski made a frantic 911 call from her Gilbert home around 11 a.m. Sunday.

She told dispatchers the 2-year-old boy she was babysitting was bleeding badly after her dogs attacked him.

The pit bull mixes were taken to animal control.

Dispatch: "Is he breathing?"

Caller: "Barely, the dogs attacked him."

Dispatch: "The dog attacked him? OK let me get the paramedics."

Caller: "His lips are turning blue!"

The boy, named Daniel, later died at the hospital. Czerniski is still in the hospital after having surgery for the injuries she got trying to break up the dog fight.

"I've seen Lara there before when I was out there visiting. She would take care of the kids and the kids seemed to like Lara, that's why this is so devastating this happened," said Tinamarie Tardiolo, Daniel's aunt.

The toddler's aunt says Czerniski babysat for the family for about 10 years, but watched them at their Mesa home most of the time. All 5 children had special needs.

"My sister and brother-in-law have very big hearts, they adopted these 5 children all with special needs. Each one of them is so beautiful, they came from troubled homes, she welcomed them into her house and she has done a fantastic job with them," said Tardiolo.

While the family had Daniel for a while, his aunt says he was only recently officially adopted. His christening was just a couple weeks ago.

"It's sad the way he had to exit this earth but I told my sister you need to understand you were a blessing to him as he was to you. They really are devastated right now."

The aunt says she doesn't believe there were any prior incidents with the kids and the dogs.

"Dogs can get pretty vicious and it's sad to see someone that young who can't defend himself get attacked by dogs," said neighbor Larry Pullen.

Animal control says the dogs were not licensed as required by law. After Czerniski woke up from her surgery, officers spoke with her and she consented to have them euthanized.

"We're not going to put a dangerous dog back in the community if we deem they should not be," said Melissa Gable, MCACC.

The fourth dog, which was not involved in the attack, will be returned to Czerniski. The other three were put down Tuesday afternoon. Their remains were sent to the state lab for rabies testing.

Police say right now they're investigating the attack as a tragic accident but say charges could be filed depending on what the investigation reveals.
