School Worker Under Investigation After Cache Of "Legally Owned" Weapons Found

Posted: Updated:
WISSONOMING -

It was Friday afternoon and Fox 29 cameras were rolling as sheriff's officers served an eviction notice on a home in the 4300 block of Deveraux Avenue. They carried out what police say was a cache of weapons from the home of a building engineer at Lincoln High School.

"It was rifles, automatic weapons, boxes of ammo, large amounts of ammo," said neighbor William Kitchen, who told Fox 29 he saw the eviction procedure going down across the street.

"He was not all there. He was going to have a battle," said neighbor Matt Layne. "He was not giving up his home."

Police locked down Lincoln High for 25 minutes after they received reports that the school employee had two handguns and two rifles in his vehicle. They turned out to be legally owned antique weapons. Police and school officials didn't take any chances.

"You have that many guns and you live alone, it's spooky," Kitchen said.

"He had rifles, guns, bow and arrow. The real hunting ones. He had it loaded under his table," Layne explained.

The man, a 20 year school employee who we are not identifying because he has not yet been charged, was ordered to undergo a psychological evaluation. He could face charges of possessing weapons on school property.

"He needs the help, that's all," Layne said. "He's just a man that broke."

Police say the weapons that were removed from his home were also legally owned. They were seized by the sheriff until this investigation is complete.

"He lived in there by himself, with no power, no gas, no electric," Layne added.

"It's too many weapons, why do you need all those weapons in the city," Kitchen asked. "It's ridiculous."

A school spokesman said the employee was removed from his position at the school pending the outcome of the investigation. He is not permitted inside the building.

Neighbors told Fox 29 they hope the man gets the help he needs.

Police say no decision has been made on criminal charges at this point. The investigation could take several more days.
