Southwind High School is home to West Tennessee's first STEM Platform School. It is one of only six in the entire state. Although it launched at the start of the current school year, Southwind will showcase its exciting, new STEM Platform School during an official grand opening reception on Tuesday, September 24, from 5:30 – 7 p.m.

Southwind High School was officially designated as a STEM Platform School site by an executive order of Governor Bill Haslam to promote and expand the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in public schools across the region. It will serve as a demonstration site for incubating, deploying and sharing innovative and best practices in STEM education in Tennessee.

The Platform program is supported through a unique public-private collaboration between the Tennessee Department of Education, the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network and Battelle Memorial Institute. Southwind was chosen to be West Tennessee's STEM Platform School site because of its proximity to the FedEx World Headquarters and International Paper, both of which are strategic partners. Also working closely with Southwind will be the University of Memphis and the West Tennessee STEM Conservatory, which will study and help create new cutting-edge STEM teaching and learning models to be shared throughout the state. Other strategic partners include St. Jude, Gizmos and Geotechnology.

Thanks to the school's many partnerships, students will have access to engineering labs and virtual engineering courses unlike anything offered in other schools. Additionally, a slate of pre-dual enrollment courses are part of the STEM curriculum, and all core classes are fully integrated with a rich STEM focus. Students all over the county were able to apply for enrollment in the STEM program last year as eighth graders. An additional 100 eighth graders will be accepted each year to complete all grade levels. Students who complete the four-year Platform program at Southwind will receive a diploma with a STEM distinction.

Grand Opening: Southwind High School will show case its STEM Platform School program Tuesday, September 24, from 5:30 – 7 p.m. School and district leaders will introduce Southwind's STEM Platform School faculty and recognize several strategic partners, including the West Tennessee STEM Conservatory, the U of M and St. Jude. Labs and curriculum will also be on display.
