HS athlete suffers football injuries, says coach continued to play him

Posted: Updated:

It's coach vs. player in this story.

James Chapman says his son, Quinn, who plays football at Lincoln Park High School, was severely injured last week during a game. Quinn was taken out of the game initially but then says he was sent back in by his coach to continue playing.

After the game and a visit to the doctor, Quinn found out he had a concussion, spinal and brain stem injuries. He was recovering in the hospital and has since been released but is walking with a cane.

Since being released from the hospital, Quinn attended a school dinner put on by the football moms. Quinn says he was confronted there by his coach who berated him, intimidated him and is trying to place the blame on Quinn for going back into the game after he got hurt.

The Chapman family is calling for the coach's resignation. They say the coach should have recognized Quinn's concussion. James was recording the game during the play in which Quinn was injured. He tells Fox 2's Ron Savage, "[Quinn] knew he was hurt and we knew he was hurt... He was shaking his head, and his helmet was off, and the coach came and said something to him and he went in the very next play."

Doctors told Quinn not to return to the field any time this season. Quinn hopes to make a full recovery and start playing again next year.
