Timeline suggests Navy Yard rampage may have lasted an hour

Posted: Updated:

A computerized record of 911 calls and police radio traffic Monday morning at the Navy Yard is revealing a chilling account of what went on there.

The minute-by-minute description obtained by FOX 5 also suggests the shooting and search for Aaron Alexis went on for well over 30 minutes and may have last an hour.

The FBI has so far released very little information on exactly how long Alexis terrorized people inside Building 197. But a chronology of events recorded by emergency dispatchers is now revealing workers in the building were sharing information with 911 and hiding wherever they could.

When Alexis opened fire on the fourth floor of Building 197 around 8:20 a.m. Monday, 911 dispatchers began receiving frantic calls.

"Subject is reloading outside of the door...room 3w2830," says one caller.

Another says, "Heard 10 shots inside building.”

And a third caller says, "Female can hear someone yelling ‘don't shoot.’”

There were also descriptions of the gunman with one dispatcher writing the caller says, "People running out of the Navy Yard stating male w/a shotgun...shooting inside the location-black outfit-w/a shotgun.”

Another describes it this way:

"Subject is a b/m, 6', close cropped hair, dark complexion, black pants, polo shirt, subject has a shoulder fired firearm.”

A third says:

"All black clothing...(Armed) w/AR 15.”

One dispatcher makes reference to the death of security guard Richard Ridgell this way:

"6th street gate...his weapon has been taken--a Navy Yard police officer...parking garage...he is stating that he is already deceased.”

There are also numerous calls from people telling 911 where they are hiding. Some were in rooms where filing cabinets have been pushed up against the door.

The timeline also suggests the shooting went on for at least 40 minutes.

At 8:57 a.m., a dispatcher writes, "They are now saying (suspect) is on 1st floor bldg 197.”

We know now Alexis was killed on the upper floors.

There are no entries specifically saying Alexis has been shot and killed.

Instead, just this at 9:26 a.m.: "Susp poss 3w399."

It is a reference apparently to a room on the third floor.

Although Alexis had been shot dead by police, it would be hours before investigators were certain they had ended the attack. With information, there may have been two other people involved.
